About this product

Product Information

A masterful work of personal reportage, this volume is also a vibrant portrait of a mysterious people and an essential document of a disappearing culture. Fabled, feared, romanticized, and reviled, the Gypsies--or Roma--are among the least understood people on earth. Their culture remains largely obscure, but in Isabel Fonseca they have found an eloquent witness. In Bury Me Standing , alongside unforgettable portraits of individuals--the poet, the politician, the child prostitute--Fonseca offers sharp insights into the humor, language, wisdom, and taboos of the Roma. She traces their exodus out of India 1,000 years ago and their astonishing history of persecution: enslaved by the princes of medieval Romania; massacred by the Nazis; forcibly assimilated by the communist regimes; evicted from their settlements in Eastern Europe, and most recently, in Western Europe as well. Whether as handy scapegoats or figments of the romantic imagination, the Gypsies have always been with us--but never before have they been brought so vividly to life. Includes fifty black and white photos.

  • Humanity, And How it treats/Mistreats Those Who Live Outside Given Societal Rules.

The story is compelling, it shows how even the different tribes of Gypsies treat one another, right up to present times. At times harrowing, the writer causes the reader to feel as if they are living the events right along with them, which shows excellent writing and storytelling skills. Definitely recommend this story to anyone wanting to learn more about Gypsies and their way of life, how the world views and treats them. (often not very kindly but the realism is needed to remind people to just simple treat others how you would like to be treated in the first place.)

The Gypsy culture has always held a curious fascination.....they are an unusual folk and this book gives you a good incite into their way of life. I found the book very enjoyable and educational.

  • Life with the Gypsies

A nice book that recounts the time spent by the author with a family of gypsies in Albania. Paints a sympathetic picture of the gypsies without being either too detached or emtionally vested. Fonseca's macro-level observations about issues like communism, race relations, religion, gender relationships are all well written. It's somewhere between a personal account and humanized social review. Liked it.

  • Good information

I am romani myself. Although i am very familiar being that i am romani i found it very informative & educational. Laurenea G.
